Tommy Grimes recorded his first live cash in May 4, 1989, he competed in a $2,500 Omaha Pot Limit event at the 20th World Series of Poker (WSOP) in Las Vegas, finishing 8th and earning $13,800.

Three days later, on May 7, 1989, Grimes participated in a $2,000 No Limit Hold’em event at the same WSOP, where he finished 2nd and earned $122,000.

On January 1997, Grimes won the $5,000 + $85 No Limit Hold’em event at the Four Queens Poker Classic in Las Vegas, taking home $150,000.

Earlier, in January 1995, he won the $500 + $30 Pot Limit Hold’em event at the Queens Poker Classic V in Las Vegas, receiving $71,200.
