Tom McEvoy: Early Life

Born on November 14, 1944, in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He developed a passion for games at a young age, learning poker from his grandmother when he was just five years old.

He attended Ferris State University, where he studied accountancy. During this time, he played very little poker, focusing instead on his academic and athletic pursuits. He was also an avid tennis player, achieving a national ranking of 60th in the country. After graduating, McEvoy took on various accounting jobs but soon found himself drawn back to the poker table, participating in weekend home games.

While earning $18,000 annually from his previous job, he recognized the potential for a future as a poker player. He planned to use his upcoming vacation time to return to Las Vegas, but before he could do so, he was laid off from his job. Subsequently, he used his severance pay to head back to Las Vegas and hone his skills.
