Tan Xuan: Early Life

Tan Xuan was born wealthy; he did not experience the “rags to riches” story. After receiving his college diploma in 2009, he bought a dance and art school. Later on, he would shift his focus from the arts to other, more reliable, and consistent means of earning a living, initially going into the steel industry and then the financial industry.

In 2014, he fell in love with poker. When he was invited to join a friend who was a player at the largest poker club in Wuhan. Xuan first found it interesting, comparing it to watching the Macau casinos shown in movies.

He played two games before they advised him to watch the 25/50 cash game. He immediately started playing, and by the end of his first session, he had lost 20,000. The next day, he returned and lost an additional $70,000 because poker had captured his attention. He developed an addiction and spent the following two months playing and losing every day.

At the same time that Xuan started to understand that poker was just a game of skill, his business earnings began to fall. Xuan lost tens of millions of dollars of his wealth in a matter of months.

Xuan’s father is a member of the Education Ministry’s group and an extremely strict parent. He wasn’t happy to learn that Xuan played poker and strongly objected to the idea.

As he watched poker matches at the time, he started copying the top players in Wuhan. Additionally, he watched videos of Tom Dwan and Phil Ivey competing in high-stakes poker tournaments.

Xuan went to Shenzhen to play with friends after a year of more thorough game study. He practiced his abilities and made quick advancements during that year. It turned out to be an exciting time in his poker career.

Now, everything comes naturally to him. In the 2015 China Poker Games Main Event, he won $281,185, defeating 1,075 players and securing the lead.

Short Deck gained popularity among Asian high-stakes players in 2017, with Xuan participating in a 1 million HKD event.
