Mark Burtman’s first live cash was recorded in March 2001. He participated in a $500 + $40 Limit 7 Card Stud Hi/Lo event at the Second Annual Jack Binion World Poker Open in Tunica. Burtman finished 7th and earned $3,027.

In August 2001, Burtman competed in a $1,000 + $60 No Limit Hold’em Championship Event at the 2nd Annual Mid-America Poker Classic, also in Tunica. He finished 2nd and cashed for $21,535.
