John Smith is an American professional poker player and Purple Heart Vietnam veteran from La Habra Heights, California. Alongside his poker career, he works as a highway contractor. Smith has over $1.75 million in total live tournament earnings, with his best live cash of $267,400 coming from a 5th-place finish at the Los Angeles Poker Classic in March 2019.

John Smith: Early Life

John Smith was born in 1947 and grew up in a small town in California. After graduating high school, he joined the U.S. Army and served in Europe in 1965 before being deployed to Vietnam. During his time in the Vietnam War, Smith endured a life-changing event when the tank he was traveling in hit a landmine. Tragically, he was the only survivor, suffering injuries and a ruptured eardrum. His bravery and sacrifice were recognized with a Purple Heart.

When he got back home and recovered, Smith transitioned to civilian life and started working as a road builder. Later, he started his own asphalt business in Los Angeles and worked hard to make it a success.

John Smith: Live Tournament Participation

John Smith recorded his first live cash in May 1991 by placing 14th in the $1,500 Seven-Card Stud Split event. It took place at the 22nd WSOP in Las Vegas, where he earned $2,655.

In February 2005, he claimed victory at the $1,060 No Limit Hold’em event. He claimed 1st place and earned $127,410 at the L.A. Poker Classic.

In June 2016, he competed in the $10,000 NLH Heads-Up Championship at the 47th WSOP in Las Vegas. He finished 2nd, earning $198,192.

In June 2017, Smith once again secured 2nd place in the $10,000 NLH Heads-Up Championship. There at the 48th WSOP in Las Vegas, this time, he earned $208,154.

In March 2019, Smith placed 5th in the $10,000 No Limit Hold’em WPT Championship Main Event at the Los Angeles Poker Classic, earning $267,400.

In August 2022, he won the $10,000 No Limit Hold’em High Roller event at the WPT Legends of Poker in Los Angeles. Smith claimed 1st place and earned $65,550.

In a recent appearance, in May 2024, Smith participated in the $25,000 No Limit Hold’em Heads-Up Championship at the 55th WSOP in Las Vegas. He finished 5th, adding $86,000 to his poker earnings.
