John Myung is a Korean-American professional poker player born on April 6, 1974, who currently resides in Vienna, Virginia. He has over $2.8 million in live tournament earnings. His best live cash of $1,000,000 came when he won the Showdown at the Sands in November 2003.
Born on April 6, 1974, in New York to a Korean family of doctors, John attended Cornell University. After completing his pre-med course, he did not pursue medical school because he was concerned about the time required, including residency. He worked at the World Trade Center, but when a job opportunity arose on Wall Street, he left his previous position. While taking a break from work, he began playing low-limit poker and eventually quit his job
He spent his years at the table grinding and developing his skills in high-limit cash games. In 2002, John achieved his first significant success by winning in the World Poker Finals in Mashantucket. Currently, he enjoys snowboarding, golfing, and spending time at home with his wife in Virginia.
John first recorded live cash occurred in November 2002 at the World Poker Finals in Mashantucket. He finished in 1st place in a $500 + 65 Limit Hold’em, winning $28,730.
Year later, in November 2003, John played in a $10,000 + 200 No Limit Hold’em Main Event during the Showdown at the Sands in Atlantic City. He clinched another victory and won his biggest live cash of $1,000,000.
Following this, in December 2004, John entered in a $3,000 + 100 Limit Hold’em at the Five-Diamond World Poker Classic in Las Vegas. He emerged victorious and won a cash prize of $173,627.
At the WPT Borgata Winter Open in Atlantic City in January 2007, he earned a cash prize of $114,950. John joined in a $5,000 + 200 No Limit Hold’em and secured 3rd place.
Later in November of that year, he participated in a $9,700 + 300 No Limit Hold’em – Championship Event at the World Poker Finals. John finished in 8th place and earned $135,102.
Continuing his success, he finished in 7th place at WPT Borgata Poker Open in September 2008, cashing $187,500.
Fast forward to June 2016. At the 47th WSOP in Las Vegas, he secured a prize of $130,588. In this event, John participated in a $1,500 No Limit Hold’em – Bounty Event #46 and finished in 3rd place.
Most recently, in June 2024, he competed in a $400 No Limit Hold’em – COLOSSUS Bracelet Event #70 at the 55th WSOP. John placed 94th and took home $4,850.
