John Heaney was an American professional poker player from Kensington, Pennsylvania, with over $347k in live tournament earnings. His best live cash of $220,000 came when he won at the 25th WSOP in April 1994.

John Heaney: Early Life

John grew up in the Kensington section of Philadelphia and attended Roman Catholic High School, which he credited with the discipline that allowed him to enlist early in the U.S. Navy. He served during the Korean War as an Aviation Ordnanceman aboard the USS Kearsarge, where he discovered his love for poker, playing with fellow sailors to unwind. After his military service, John attended Drexel University, where he majored in accounting and met his wife. Following a successful career in business, his passion for poker grew, and he began competing in tournaments. During a trip to Las Vegas, he achieved his first WSOP bracelet.

John Heaney: Live Tournament Participation

John Heaney’s first recorded live cash occurred in May 1992 at the 23rd WSOP in Las Vegas. He finished in 16th place in a $10,000 No Limit Hold’em World Championship, cashing $10,100.

Following this, in April 1993, John entered the $1,500 Seven Card Stud event at the 24th WSOP. He came very close to capturing his first bracelet but ended up in 2nd place, pocketing $65,550.

A year later, in April 1994, John played in a $2,500 No Limit Hold’em at the 25th WSOP. He finished in 1st place, winning his best live cash of $220,000.

Then, in May 1995, John participated in a $10,000 No Limit Hold’em World Championship at the 26th WSOP. He ended up in 27th place, taking home $17,300.

In May 1996, John joined in a $2,500 Seven Card Stud at the 28th WSOP. He finished in 10th place, claiming $5,400.

Fast forward to January 2007. He engaged in a $5,000 + 200 No Limit Hold’em at the WPT Borgata Winter Open in Atlantic City. He made 27th place finish, securing $7,865.

His final appearance was on May 18, 2015. He competed in a $150 +30 No Limit Hold’em Main Event at the $100k GTD Borgata Mini-Series in Atlantic City. Ronald ended up in 74th place, earning $343.
