His best live cash of $173,900 came when he secured his first bracelet at the 31st WSOP in May 2001. Jimmy Athanas began his poker career in January 1985 at the Grand Prix of Poker in Las Vegas. He played in a $1,000 Limit Omaha event, finishing in 3rd place and earning $10,556.

The following year, in January 1986, he competed in a $500 No Limit Hold’em tournament at the same event, securing 2nd place and cashing $44,700.

In February 1990, Athanas participated in a $1,500 + 50 Limit 7 Card Stud event at Amarillo Slim’s Superbowl of Poker in Las Vegas.

There, he finished in 2nd place, earning $30,600. Subsequently, in May 1992, he placed 2nd again in a $1,500 Hold’em Pot Limit event at the 23rd World Series of Poker, which earned him $57,900.
