Hoyt Corkins: Early Life

Born on December 20, 1959, in Glenwood, Hoyt Corkins developed a deeper interest in poker when he learned the game from his father, who taught him his ferocious “attack-first” style of play. Corkins, who began playing poker in his teens, soon realized he had a talent for the game. After winning over $2,000 just a week after graduating from high school, he was hooked. He attended Troy State University for a year while playing in various Southeast cities. As his skills grew, he moved to Las Vegas to compete for bigger stakes.

After winning his first WSOP bracelet, Corkins took an 11-year break from poker and returned to his hometown. Despite being away from the game for so long, he continued to win, including a $1 million victory and earning his second bracelet.
