Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Phillips graduated with a degree in Political Science and was accepted into law school at the University of Florida. However, he chose instead to apply his newly acquired skills to the sales industry. While in college, Phillips worked as a bartender and met someone who was starting a travel agency. He worked there as a salesman for a few years.
