Chris Moore is an American professional poker player from Countryside, Illinois, with over $3.7 million in live tournament earnings. His best live cash of $852,885 came when he finished 5th at the 48th WSOP in June 2017.

Did Chris Fake Diagnosis to Exploit Charity?

Phil Nagy, the CEO of Americas Cardroom, announced a charitable staking initiative for the $5,000,000 GTD Venom PKO, a prestigious tournament with a $2,650 buy-in. He planned to stake six players, offering a 50/50 profit split with the player and a breast cancer charity. To qualify, players needed to post a video explaining why they deserved the stake. Chris tried to exploit this generosity by faking a cancer diagnosis. He posted a supposed “doctor’s letter” on Twitter, claiming it confirmed his cancer diagnosis. However, the letter was riddled with obvious grammatical errors and inconsistencies, raising suspicions.

The poker community quickly called out Moore, including poker pro Chris Moneymaker. Moneymaker shared the fake letter to expose the scam. He also revealed Moore’s history of erratic behavior, including sending death threats to Phil Nagy and other ACR pros after being confronted. Instead of escalating the situation, Moneymaker offered Moore financial assistance for mental health counseling, highlighting his concern for Moore’s well-being despite the scam and threats. In a strange turn of events, Moore ignored that he had sent death threats and instead threatened to sue Moneymaker for sharing his address online. This claim came from Moneymaker posting the fake letter Moore had shared.
